[Webinar Recap] Crisis Management in China Post-Covid

In the light of Covid-19 reshaping business and investment dynamics in China nowadays, international businesses need to navigate a new set of challenges.

On October 26, the speakers Ms. Anna Lukina, Business Development and Marketing Director at A&Z Law Firm and Ms. Trudy Wang, Managing Director and Head of Shanghai Office at TrailRunner International, shared their insights on the topic of crisis management in China. The event was moderated by Mr. Michael Hickman, Principal, Asia Pacific, Control Risks and organized by BritCham Shanghai.

The speakers focused on both the big picture and some specific case studies related to crises, which have become especially relevant due to Covid-19.

Ms. Lukina from A&Z Law Firm, focused on the “Legal Aspects of Crisis Management in China”. She commented on several case studies, explained relevant labor regulations in detail, as well as touching on the topic of contract law and force majeure.

Here are some of the key conclusions that international companies should keep in mind:
・The Covid-19 policies in place have restricted travel and exchanges with China to an unprecedented extent in recent history. It has had an impact on business, but also on the types of cases that law firms handle. Find new ways to stay engaged with the local management and workforce. Follow up any agreement you sign more closely than ever.
You might have legal knowledge and experience in different jurisdictions, but it’s often the differences, no matter how subtle, that may cause serious damage. In these difficult times, pay more attention to compliance than ever and prepare, as much as possible, for different scenarios that might occur.
Get specialists with localized knowledge to help you. Navigating China is a complex endeavour, and if you are serious about exploring business opportunities here, this will pay off.

Many thanks to the speakers and organizers for such an informative event. If you would like to know more about the topic of crisis management in China, don’t hesitate to reach out to A&Z Law Firm’s professionals.
