Hazardous waste refers to discarded material able to damage the environment cause harmful to health. Hazardous waste includes heavy metals and toxic chemicals used in industrial processes and products. Since 2010, China’s industrialization process has also resulted in concerns pertaining to hazardous waste. During the congress, experts discussed the problems that companies frequently face, as well as the different waste treatment possibilities at their disposal, taking into account advanced technologies utilizable in providing solutions to the current problems.

Among the common problems; processing capacity is a noticeable topic which reoccurs in discussion. While the disposal capability of certain types of hazardous wastes has developed significantly, there is a required room for improvement in order to satisfy increasing demand. Another problem concerns site selection planning of enterprises engaging in the disposal of hazardous wastes, which does not account for the construction of industrial parks where the possibility of disposing at a nearby place is unlikely. The third main problem identified during the congress regarded techniques for the disposing of hazardous wastes in a harm-minimizing fashion, while and lowing rate of comprehensive utilization.

Several attorneys from A&Z’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department also attended the congress, whose primary focus concerns that of providing legal advice to companies on safety production and occupational health, informing of the main risks for manufacturing companies when complying with China's Environmental Law, as well as assisting companies in the formulation of effective internal risk control systems. Notably, A&Z’s EHS department is also experienced in coping with emergency situations such as environmental pollution and safety production accidents, which was a reoccurring theme throughout the congress.

During the congress, A&Z attorneys engaged with industry leaders to exchange ideas and solutions to prevent risks, comply with the Environmental Law and reduce or avoid the risk of administrative penalties from a legal perspective, stimulating not only their own knowledge, but complementing advice to be given to clients.
